As the price per ounce of gold continues to increase, so too does the impact of gold mining. A July 14, 2008 article by Anna Stablum titled “Big Increase in Illegal Gold Mining as Price Rockets,” discusses the social and environmental implications of the largely unregulated industry.

Stablum points out that as farmers, indigenous people in Peru, Ghana and other developing countries earn about a $1 per day, but with mining, they may earn $2-3 per day. Many men ignore the increased risk of mining in an effort to provide for their families.
